When it comes to fleet management, utility vans play a crucial role and ensuring they meet the strict regulations is paramount. The utility industry, including sectors such as energy, water, and telecoms companies, operates under rigorous rules and guidelines to ensure the highest standards of service and compliance. As a result, utility companies in the UK are among the most heavily regulated in the world.

One of the essential requirements set forth by the Department for Transport's Code of Practice is high visibility rear chevron markings on utility vans. These markings consist of alternating strips of fluorescent orange or red reflective material and fluorescent yellow non-retro-reflective material. By incorporating these chevron markings, utility vans become highly visible, so they are easily seen by other road users. The Department for Transport strongly recommends these markings in England and Northern Ireland, while they are compulsory in Scotland and Wales.

Amber warning beacons are an essential safety feature for utility vans. These beacons provide visual warnings to alert others of the vehicle's presence, especially during mobile or short-duration work. It is crucial that at least one beacon is visible from any direction, and they must remain illuminated at all times. Even when the vehicle is travelling at speed lower than the general traffic flow or during short-duration static works.

Additional Requirements:

  • Reflective markings and safety signage for Chapter 8 compliance
  • Properly installed towbars
  • Customised racking systems for efficient organisation
  • Hand wash units to promote hygiene
  • Night heaters for worker comfort in cold weather conditions

By incorporating these safety features, utility companies can significantly reduce the risk of accidents, improve worker safety, and enhance overall fleet performance.
